Galleface Court 02
Apartment
Nestled in a prominent part of Colombo, this apartment is housed in an iconic landmark overlooking the Galleface Green and Galleface Hotel. A heritage building of majestic stature and over a century old lies with its own challenges in renovating to suit the needs of a modern family. The inspiration lay in the history of the building itself, to celebrate this heritage while bringing emphasis to the new modern additions of the current needs. Structural elements tucked away behind ceiling were exposed to create dramatic spaces changing the dynamic of a previous cuboid space. Whilst walls and ceilings were intended as a continuous plane by use of the same tone, floors were exaggerated with details derived from a classical language to compliment the architectural details. Glass and aluminium doors distinguished the new from the old teak doors. The palette was carefully chosen to bring in a calm feel to the home.
The apartment is a large sprawl of over 300 square metres in area with multiple rooms, large living and dining and a kitchen tucked away for the many helpers back in the day. The renovations were addressed with need for the kitchen being an extension of the living and dining and the contention of changing the floe of space to modern day living. The ceiling was stripped off to expose the roof structure and the large steel trusses and the timber beams being exposed as an innate design detail bringing in a new dramatic volume to this previously cuboid space.
