Scarlett Skyy
Rooftop restaurant and bar
The design was conceived as an evocative representation of Sri Lanka’s vibrant culture and tradition, seamlessly blended into a contemporary lifestyle. The aim was to provide an authentically local experience in a modern setting allowing for the celebration of Sri Lankan cuisine as the daily nuances of city life is viewed from atop; the morning catch being brought in by the local fisherman, to the transitional market that renders the street alive to the magical evening setting sun that paints the skies and the ocean scarlet.
The restaurant space was sculpted as a pavilion, wholly embracing this and as a viewing platform as one meanders through this slow life of the Sri Lankan South Coast. Afar one can see the illustrious Galle Fort, a UNESCO Heritage Site. The pavilion was fringed with retail stalls of interest, dining, bar and an open kitchen as pockets of varying ambience and functions. The interior is articulated with historical furniture and artefacts with contemporary patterns reflecting the characteristics of Galle Fort. The spatial language is a derivation from the courtyard houses of Galle Fort, transitioning from the street, verandah, communal space to the private to the service area. A stretch of pergolas delight one with some shadow play in the day. This is the interpretation of the traditional verandah. The palette of terracotta and viridian strike resemblance to the local natural palette.
